The importance of hi-tech industry in our business and private lives is growing rapidly through a combination of accelerating technological innovation, price reductions, new products, intense competition and regulatory changes. In particular, embedded systems are becoming effectively ubiquitous, appearing in all human activities and constituting an ever larger segment of microelectronics systems; it is worthwhile recalling that at the recent Intel European Academic Forum (September 2001) experts forecast that the volume share of microelectronic devices in embedded systems would in a short time cap 95% of the total volume for microelectronic technology.
