University of Lugano, ALaRI
The University of Lugano is of recent creation, (1995) but it has already received the official
accreditation by the Council of Swiss Universities. While it does not at present offer studies in
Engineering or Computer Science, it has a School of Communication strongly oriented towards
technology-based Communications, providing as such a number of technological courses and endowed
with state-of the art networking supports. In its School of Economics as well, information
technologies constitute a subject of research and of teaching. There are presently plans to open a
Computer Science School as well; a Committee studying this opportunity has been established.
In 1999, the University Council decided to create an Advanced Learning and Research Institute
(ALaRI) specifically oriented towards embedded systems design, having recognized the relevance
of such subject to the economics of Switzerland (and of Canton Ticino in particular). The initial
scope of ALaRI was the creation of a Master of Engineering in Embedded Systems Design, in cooperation
with a number of other Universities (the Steering Committee includes representatives of Politecnico
di Milano, the two Swiss Polytechnics, and Stanford University). ALaRI lecturers come from such
Universities as well as from other European and US Universities, research centers and industries.
The initiative has the support of several multinational companies as well as of the local (Cantonal)
government. The first Class of the Master, with a small number of students from several European and
Asian countries, graduated in July 2001 with very good results (one of the Master projects led to filing
a patent). The second class (23 students selected out of 67 applicants from eight countries) has started
its studies in September 2001.
